So ... I bought a picture for my parents for Christmas, now I'm a member of the Fine Arts Society. This gets me into the deYoung and Legion of Honor for free. I've lived here for eight years, walking distance from the deYoung and only about two miles from the Legion of Honor (still walking distance). I've been passed them both a number of times. I love the Thinker, but I've never been into either. A couple of weeks ago I went to the Legion and was amazed. I even fell in love with the Broken Pitcher. So much so that I took advantage of my discount and become a member of the Fine Art Society (it just gets me into these two museums for free).
Today I went to the deYoung. It's impressive, but I'll be honest, it's no where near as impressive as the Legion of Honor. I came to the realization that I still really don't like art that much ... I LOVE the old stuff. Some Renaissance stuff is awesome, but most of the stuff I find myself really attracted to is the Reformation/post Reformation (mostly 18th/19th Century stuff).
Funny thing, that's the period of history I like the most as well. I guess I'm not surprised.

You "really don't like art that much"??!! Oh dear.
Take for example what is frequently considered "art." Some of it looks like a two year old got onto a block of wood with a chisel, some of it is considered "art" simply because it pisses people off...the ability to make me think about something doesn't necessarily make what I'm thinking about profound.
It's a personal preference...throw me into the Sistene Chapel, I'll be amazed, trust me. But paint ball shots on canvas danced on by naked women (while a profound image while created) doesn't necessarily impress me so much as art. It is possible I'm too simple to understand the profound meaning of it.
